Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation,
also known as augmentation mammoplasty, includes all surgical procedures used to
enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. The optimal result of these
procedures not only includes increasing the volume of the breasts but also to
bring them closer together to create cleavage and to lift the breasts to correct
sagging.
Some reasons our patients consider Breast Augmentation surgery include
having naturally small breasts, wishing to restore lost volume after childbirth
and nursing, to correct asymmetry in cup size, and as reconstruction following
mastectomy for breast cancer.
There are various implants that can be used for breast augmentation.
You can choose between textured or smooth implants; the shape can be round or
tear drop; and the composition can be saline, silicone gel and soon to come, the
silicone “gummybear” implants, also known as Allergan Style 410 implants. Dr. Le
will explain the differences between the implants to guide your choices and help
you achieve the results you desire.
There are several surgical approaches we use, including inframammary,
trans axillary, peri-areolar and umbilical. The implant can be placed above or
below the pectoralis (“pec”) muscle. Dr. Le will discuss all your options with
you and make a recommendation on what he believes would give you the best
cosmetic result.
What you can expect:
Most breast augmentation procedures take between 1 and 2 hours. Some
procedures require general anesthesia and others can be done under local with
sedation. In general, these are done as an outpatient, and you will go home the
same day. You can expect temporary swelling, soreness, change in nipple
sensation and some bruising. Your breasts will remain sensitive to touch for
several weeks after the procedure. The risks of these procedures include risk of
bleeding, infection or the need for reoperation. The implants may need to be
replaced for various reasons, including capsular contraction, a condition in
which scar tissue develops making the breasts feel tight or hard. Occasionally
patients have a decrease in the sensitivity of the nipples or breast skin;
rarely this can be permanent. You can expect to be back to work in a few days
but should not allow vigorous physical contact with your breasts for 3-4 weeks
after surgery. It takes several months to a year for your scars to mature and
reach their final result.
