Reduction Mammaplasty (Breast Reduction)
Breast reduction,
also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure that reshapes the breasts in
order to make them smaller, lighter and more firm. For many patients, large
breasts cause physical pain as well as anxiety in social situations. Breast
reduction often makes exercise more comfortable, can make fitting clothes easier
and gives a more proportionate appearance.
Some reasons our patients consider breast reduction include back or
neck pain caused by the weight of excessively heavy breasts, bra-strap marks or
indentations, rashes under the breast, breast sagging, and disproportionately
large breasts on a small frame. Your insurance may cover part or all of the
procedure, particularly if you have documented rash, bra-strap marks, and/or
back pain.
The breast reduction operation is done through an incision that encircles the
areola and is carried down to below the breast. Dr. Le will choose the incision
most appropriate for your situation. He will then remove the excess breast
tissue, fat and skin and reposition the nipple and use suture to secure the
nipple and pull the remaining breast tissue and skin back together to recreate
an aesthetically pleasing, smaller, firmer breast. Liposuction of the sides of
the breast may also be necessary to create a beautiful result.
What you can expect:
Most breast reduction operations last 3-4 hours and are done under general
anesthesia. You will most likely go home the same day and will have a special
bra to wear. You should continue to wear the special garments provided for
several weeks after the surgery and adhere to the guidelines for limitation in
activity that we will provide to you in order to minimize complications and get
the best cosmetic result. You can expect some bruising, swelling, soreness and
areas of numbness that may or may not resolve. It is important to know that all
breast reduction surgery carries the risk of bleeding, infection, asymmetry,
difficulty healing and permanent loss of sensation. Generally, strenuous
activity is prohibited for 1 month after breast reduction surgery. It takes
several months to a year for your scars to mature and reach their final result.
